Did you know there are 47 reasons why a person needs a Fingerprint Clearance Card? The 47 reasons are actually statues that pair with a sponsor. The sponsor is a government entity such as the Board of Nursing or the Department of Health that implements rules, policies, and statutes. Anyone who whose work falls into one of the 47 categories (statutes) must obtain a fingerprint clearance card prior to or as a condition of licensure, certification, or employment. The Statutes currently list 47 reasons (statutes) why a person may need a fingerprint clearance card. So, when you’re not sure which version of the fingerprint clearance card you need –either an IVP or a Level One– or even which box to check, you should look to your licensing, certifying, or authorizing agency, board, or employer (sponsor). They can better advise if you need a fingerprint clearance card and which Statue provides the reason for the requirement. Many of our clients think they need a new fingerprint clearance card if they change jobs or fields of work. That is not the case. But what you must do is, if your card is still in force and unexpired, you simply contact the Department of Public Safety and ask them to add or delete a sponsor. You can do that at any time during the 6 years your card is valid.
